Greek v. Christian

Peace Love and Pear Jelly Beans

I’ve been trying to find the balance between being a sorority girl and being a Disciple of Christ.  I want to be fully submerged in my faith, yet I want to be the “total sorority girl.”  I’m trying to find the line between the two.  But then I think that you can’t “cut off” your faith at some point because that defeats the purpose of the promise you made when you accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior.  But then again, where is the line on the vow you made when you were initiated into your organization.  Yes, faith trumps Earthly pleasures, but having faith doesn't mean you can have fun on Earth.

So where’s this “line?”  I think back to when I was still thinking about Alpha Sigma Tau as my organization of choice.  And I chose it for more than just the sisters.  It was their values, leadership, and service that got me hooked.  Yet every article I’ve read about Christians joining Greek Life was about how you could NEVER grow in your faith if you are in a Greek Organization.  I’m sorry, WHAT?!?  Wait there’s more, one article described Greeks as having an Anti-Christ agenda!

First of all, don't tell me I won't grow in my faith.  Last week I had a stressful week and decided on a whim to just go back to PA.  On the way home I read my Bible.  Tears just rolled down my face in awe of who God is and what He was doing in that moment in my life.  Another time I got in a fight with a sister.  I confronted her and we worked things out.  If you know me at all I would much rather be mad at you for years than confront the issue, but by faith I did it.  And I followed the way the Bible encourages you to confront your brother, if the brother doesn't listen get a mediator...right?  Yet, I'm not growing in my faith?

So I sinned right? NO!  I joined an organization with values that truly lined up with mine.  We serve our community through philanthropy.  We build for Habitat for Humanity.  We help out other organizations, and you’re going to tell me I have an Anti-Christ agenda?
Yes, Greeks like to party, underage drink, and do drugs, but not ALL of us.  Not to mention the fact that sin carries no “quality,” therefore a sin is a sin whether the sin is getting wasted on Thirsty Thursday or lying to your friend about how many hours of sleep you got last night!  We all sin, we all sin differently.  This doesn’t mean I’m not a Disciple of Christ.
Yes we have rituals.  Non-Greeks see it as “idol” worship.  But we aren’t worshipping!  We are recognizing and celebrating our VALUES, and my org’s values…guess what they are based on?  The Bible.  Hm funny, isn’t that the Word of God? Oh but wait we worship the Devil…WRONG!

And now I realize the greatest lesson of all, there is no line, it’s not one or the other, they are both part of me, part of life.  My last thought on it is this:  the Great Commission sends us out into the world to create Disciples to ALL the nations.  If Christian’s don’t wear Greek letters, how are we going to reach the lost who wear those letters?
