And He Shall Be Called || Wonderful Counselor

Once a month I get half excited for my therapy appointments.  The other half of me wants to throw-up because I’m not quite sure what is going to come out of my mouth. But let’s focus on the first half.

So...once a month my excited-half is ready to talk to my therapist. [Everyone say, “hi” to Megan!]

I get excited because I have this sweet soul in my life.  I get to talk about life with someone whose job is to care for me, listen to me, and guide me.  Let me tell you...that’s not a job I want!

When my life crumbled in my hands two years ago, I didn’t know what to do with the broken pieces.  But God makes us all parts of His Body and one of those parts happens to be mental health professionals. [Round of applause for these heroes]  When we are in that state, heck, even when things are good, God leads us to them for guidance.

While God made some pretty amazing mental health professionals, the Truth is that He is the most Wonderful Counselor.

Over 700 years before Jesus was born, Isaiah prophesied the character of Jesus:

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

--Isaiah 9:6 (KJV)

Though Isaiah was prophesying about Jesus, I think he was also proclaiming the character of God at that time. A counselor is someone who takes wisdom and applies it.  Isn’t that what the all-knowing wise God does?

David saw this same characteristic in God:

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;

    I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.

--Psalm 32:8 (NIV)

From the days of the Isrealites in captivity to their journey to the Promise Land - God counselled them.  From the days of Joseph in the pit to Joseph the king - God counselled him.  From the days of David in the meadows to David the king - God counselled him.

Then God gives us His Son - God made into flesh to walk the earth.  And Jesus was called Wonderful Counselor.  He counselled the 5000 along the side of the hill and His disciples about provision.  He counselled Martha about rest.  He counselled His closest friends on being a servant.

But before He left earth, Jesus gave us another Counselor - the Holy Spirit (John 14).  I’ve been counselled by the Holy Spirit in my life.  Holy Spirit counselled me when I was deciding between colleges.  Holy Spirit counsels me daily to know what battles to fight.  Holy Spirit counselled me when my world was breaking in my hand and led me to therapy (the Counselor got me counselling!).

Oh what a Wonderful Counselor He is!  Isaiah nailed this Truth.  I mean think about it - think about the times He has lead your heart into the right direction.  Think about the times He has applied Wisdom in your life.
